Study tips to retain information.

Study tips to retain information.

Studying is one of those things in school that is not much fun to do, but is necessary to keep the brain organized and to recall information. Studying can be the difference between getting an A in a class and getting a C. Here are a few tips to make your studying just a bit easier, better organized and more enjoyable.

Create flashcards- Studies have shown that writing down your notes compared to typing them, helps you retain information more efficiently. Flash cards let you write down the information a second time and turn studying into a game or competition to remember exactly what is written down on the card. Notecards activate the brain more than simply reading notes on a piece of paper or written on a computer.

Study with classmates- Studying with classmates is a great way to make studying a more enjoyable process and to see and learn things from a different perspective. Studying with fellow classmates builds camaraderie with one another and is a sign of support. Those who study together, succeed together. Study groups are also good if you were to miss a set of notes or a teacher goes too quickly to write down all the information. Working together you can always learn more than you can by yourself

Relax, breathe, step away- Studying can be a daunting task, even with help from others and great techniques. In the medical field, there are a lot of terms to remember. Sometimes the best thing to do is to step back from the studying and relax and let the information absorb into your brain. For every hour you study,  give yourself 10 minutes to let your mind relax and absorb the information you just studied. Over-studying can be just as bad as not studying at all.

When it is study time, stay away from distractions- If you are studying notes on your computer, close your web browser, and if you are studying from a notebook put the phone away and turn off the T.V. Studies show that only a small fraction of the population can actually effectively multitask. Set your time to study either before errands or after but set the time and let studying be the only thing that is on your mind.
