How Medical Assistants Save Lives Every Day

Since medical assistants don’t have the same medical education that physicians do, it can be hard to see how medical assistants save lives. But although it can be relatively easy to become a good medical assistant, a good medical assistant is not easy to replace!

Folk wisdom tells us that one of a doctor’s toughest jobs is simply getting patients in the door, especially for check-ups! And although kids can complain about having to go to the doctor, parents are even worse.

Fact:

Very few parents who get check-ups for their kids end up making appointments for themselves! But statistically speaking, these yearly appointments save more lives through preventative care than emergency-room visits ever could.

When a patient visits a doctor for a checkup, he or she is giving the doctor a chance to give life-saving advice related to lifestyle choices, recent medical developments, and even the health of close friends and family members.

Another fact:

Especially in bigger hospitals where doctors have a large number of patients and can spend only about 10 minutes with each one, a patient is much more likely to remember the face of a medical assistant than the face of a physician!

After all, the doctor might have a good bedside manner, but the medical assistant is the one who leads most of the back-and-forth conversation. A patient who feels at ease is going to give more valuable information to the doctor when he or she walks in as well. Also, patients are much more likely to come back to the doctor if they feel welcomed and cared for when the medical assistant is taking their vital signs and recording their information. How medical assistants save lives is often by helping doctors retain their patients so that they can grow their business and resources to heal more people.

These patient care interactions are the glue that sticks a patient to a doctor, and the face and voice of a medical assistant stick out in a patient’s mind when the patient thinks about his or her doctor visit!

In many offices and hospitals, how medical assistants save lives is by being the people who patients think of when they’re deciding whether to make an appointment or follow up after a procedure. Especially paired with a friendly medical administrative assistant, a medical assistant can make the difference between a healthy person and a sick one, changing — and saving — lives every day!

How medical assistants save lives is not always obvious – but doctors with good medical assistance know firsthand that a medical assistant can make all the difference between a patient who commits to being healthy and a patient who shirks checkups and leaves medical concerns unvoiced. By becoming a medical assistant, you can help encourage the people in your community to stay healthy and foster strong relationships with their doctors so that they find problems early and live longer better lives.
